Why Adults Across the 805 Train at 805.

  • Real Skill, Not Cardio Theater

Every class teaches a transferable technique with real application. The conditioning is a byproduct of training correctly, not the whole point.

  • Train at Your Pace

Adults of every fitness level train here. Coaches calibrate intensity to where you are, not where the fastest person in the room is.

  • Pure Carlos Machado Lineage

An official Carlos Machado academy. The Jiu-Jitsu you learn traces straight through the Machado family to Carlos Gracie.

  • A Room Without Ego

Beginners are protected, partners look out for each other, and nobody is trying to prove a point. That is how people stay on the mat for years.

Who Sets The Standard

Joshua "Cowboy" Ruiz

Joshua "Cowboy" Ruiz walked into 805 as a white belt in 2016 and never left. He earned every belt on this mat and now owns the academy and leads instruction. Off the mat he has worked as a bounty hunter and executive-protection specialist since 2011, which is where his self-defense teaching comes from: real situations, taught plainly, with no ego. His standard for the room is the one in the name on the door: train smart, stay humble.

What Adults Always Ask

Every Question Adults Ask Before Signing Up.

Can I start if I am out of shape?

Yes. Every class meets you at your current fitness level and builds from there. Conditioning is a result of training, not a requirement to start. You do not need to get fit before you walk in.

I am in my 40s or 50s. Is this for me?

Absolutely. Some of our most consistent and technical members started later in life. BJJ rewards patience and problem-solving over athleticism, and coaches train adult bodies realistically.

What is the difference between BJJ and Muay Thai?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is grappling: control, leverage, and ground-game self-defense that works regardless of size. Muay Thai is striking: punches, kicks, knees, elbows, and a serious workout. Both build real capability, and many adults train both (bundled at a discount).

How often should I come per week?

Two to three classes a week produces steady progress. With sessions running up to six days a week, including 6 AM and 11 AM adult classes and evenings, most schedules can fit it.

What gear do I need?

Nothing for the free week, just comfortable athletic clothes and a water bottle. Training is barefoot on the mat. If you continue, we will tell you exactly what to buy for the program you choose.

Will I have to spar right away?

No. Live rolling and sparring are introduced only when you and your coach agree you are ready. There is no timeline pressure and no expectation that you spar before you can do it safely.

Is it safe?

BJJ has one of the lowest injury rates of any martial art, and our no-ego culture keeps training controlled. New students drill technique before any live work, and intensity is always calibrated per person.

Do you have a discount for those who serve?

Yes. Military, law enforcement, first responders, security, and healthcare workers train for $150/mo. See our service-member page for details.

How does the free week work?

It is one full week of unlimited classes, free. Pick a start date, show up, and train as much as you want: BJJ, Muay Thai, fitness. No long-term contract to try it.

No Experience Required
