Your Questions, Answered.
Can I start BJJ with zero experience?
Yes. Most of our adults walked in with no background at all. Beginners are welcome in every class and instructors meet you exactly where you are. The first few weeks are about getting comfortable, not keeping up.
What is the difference between gi and no-gi?
Gi training uses the jacket and pants for grips and control and tends to be slower and more technical. No-gi is faster and relies on body positioning instead of grips. We teach both, and you can train whichever fits you. Most members do a mix.
Is BJJ safe to train regularly?
BJJ has one of the lowest injury rates in martial arts. There are no strikes to the face and no knockouts. Live rolling is introduced progressively once your technique is solid, and our no-ego culture keeps training controlled.
How often should I train?
Two to three classes a week is the sweet spot for real progress. With classes running up to six days a week, including early mornings and evenings, most schedules can fit it.
What does it cost after the trial class?
BJJ membership is $200/mo, or $250/mo for both BJJ and Muay Thai. Military, law enforcement, first responders, security, and healthcare workers train for $150/mo. We will walk you through the options after your trial class. No pressure during the trial.
Is BJJ safe for a four-year-old?
Very. There is no striking. Kids BJJ is positional control and movement games introduced at a four-to-six-year-old level, supervised closely the whole time.
Will BJJ help my child with bullying?
Yes, but not by teaching kids to fight. BJJ builds the calm confidence that makes a kid a less likely target, plus the real ability to control a situation safely if it ever comes to that.
Do I need to be in shape to start Muay Thai?
No. The conditioning is the result of training, not the requirement to start. Coaches scale the rounds to your current level from day one.
Will I have to spar?
Not unless and until you want to and the coach agrees you are ready. Plenty of members train Muay Thai for the skill and the workout and never spar.
Can my kid do Muay Thai?
Yes, we run striking for kids ages 6 to 12 as well as teens and adults 13 and up, each calibrated to the age group.
Do I need martial arts experience for the fitness classes?
No. Fitness is open to anyone age 6 and up. It is conditioning, mobility, and core movement. No sparring and no martial arts background required.
How do I try a class for free?
Book a trial class. One full hour on the mat for $59.99, so you can see how the room feels before deciding anything.
How long has 805 Combat Sports been in Simi Valley?
We have trained out of 1407 E. Los Angeles Ave, Unit J, Simi Valley, CA 93065 since 2016. Most of our roughly 100 members come from Simi Valley and the surrounding communities, and a lot of them have been on this mat for years.
