Kids classes serve ages 4-12; your coach will place your child in the right group. Schedule subject to change. Holiday updates posted at least 48 hours in advance on Facebook and Instagram.

Holiday Closures

We close for major holidays.

The academy closes on major federal holidays including Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. Reduced schedules apply during holiday weeks, typically running morning classes only. We post all holiday schedule changes to our Facebook and Instagram pages at least 48 hours in advance. Members also receive an email notification. Call (805) 263-1553 if you are unsure whether we are open on a specific day.

Drop-In Policy

Active members can drop into any eligible class.

Current members may attend any class within their enrolled program without advance registration, subject to capacity. For specialty classes and events with limited spots, advance sign-up is required and noted on the event listing. Prospective students on the trial period may attend any class that matches their program and age band. Visitors who are not yet enrolled are welcome to watch any class from the observation area without registration.

Makeup Class Policy

Missed classes can be made up within the same week.

If a student misses a scheduled class, they may attend any equivalent class offered that same week as a makeup without additional charge. Makeup classes do not roll over to the following week. Students who need to miss an extended period due to illness, travel, or injury should contact the front desk to discuss a hold or credit option. We work with families on a case-by-case basis and do not penalize students for circumstances outside their control.

Save These Dates

Upcoming Events at the Dojo.

Belt testings, in-house tournaments, and family events are scheduled across the year. For the current calendar, check the noticeboard at the academy or follow our Facebook and Instagram pages. We post every event with at least two weeks of notice so families can plan.

Before You Come In

What to Know for Your First Class.

First-time nerves are normal and expected. This list covers everything so your first visit is straightforward from the moment you walk in.

RESERVE MY SPOT
  1. 01

    Arrive 10 minutes early

Early arrival lets us sign you in, show you around, and introduce you to the instructor before class starts. Rushing in at the last minute means missing context that makes the first class easier to follow.

  2. 02

    Wear athletic clothing

Shorts or sweatpants and a t-shirt work for your first class. You do not need a gi to start. If you continue after your free week, we will fit you for one. No need to buy or prepare anything before your first visit.

  3. 03

    Bring a water bottle

Classes run 30 to 60 minutes depending on the program. Staying hydrated matters, especially in your first few sessions before your conditioning catches up.

  4. 04

Leave the gear shopping for later

No special equipment is needed for the trial class. When you decide to enroll, we will give you a specific list and tell you where to get it without overpaying.

  5. 05

Parents: the viewing area is ready for you

Dedicated seating is available in the parent observation area. Watching the class in full is encouraged for first visits. We want you to see exactly what your child is experiencing from the first day.

  6. 06

    No experience is needed

Every student starts somewhere. Instructors will meet you at your current level and give you corrections and encouragement throughout. Showing up is the only prerequisite for the first class.

  7. 07

Remove shoes at the mat edge

All training happens barefoot on the mat. Shoes are removed at the edge before stepping on. This is a standard protocol and will be pointed out when you arrive if you miss the signage.

  8. 08

    Ask questions after class

After the class ends, the instructor will check in with new students. That is the right time to ask about the curriculum, pacing, and what to expect in the weeks ahead. No question is too basic.

Inside A Class

What a Typical Class Looks Like on Our Mat.

  1. 1

    Line Up and Bow In

Students line up in order of rank at the start of every class and bow to open the session. This is a two-second routine that signals the transition from outside life to focused training. Students who are chronically late miss this, which is why arriving early matters.

  2. 2

    Warm-Up

Every class opens with a structured warm-up that includes movement drills, mobility work, and light cardiovascular activity appropriate for the age group and program. For kids, this often includes movement games. For adult programs, it is more technique-focused. The warm-up runs 8 to 12 minutes.

  3. 3

    Technique Instruction

The instructor introduces one to three related techniques for the day. Each technique is demonstrated in full, broken down step by step, and demonstrated again before students attempt it. For new students, this is the slowest and most detailed part of the class. Instructors welcome questions here.

  4. 4

    Drilling with a Partner

Students pair up and drill the technique repeatedly with a partner. Repetitions build muscle memory. The instructor circulates and provides individual corrections. New students are paired intentionally with experienced partners who can guide them through the movement with patience.

  5. 5

    Controlled Application

Advanced and intermediate students apply their technique in a controlled live setting, whether that is light sparring, positional rolling, or situational drilling. New students observe or participate at a reduced resistance level under close instructor supervision. This section only applies when the student is ready.

  6. 6

    Cool-Down and Debrief

The final five minutes of every class are spent cooling down, stretching, and debriefing. The instructor highlights what the class worked on, acknowledges students who demonstrated the technique well, and previews what is coming next. This is where the lesson sticks.

  7. 7

    Bow Out

Students bow out in the same formation they opened in. For new students, the instructor will check in briefly after class to answer questions and give early feedback. Parents of younger students are invited to speak with the instructor at this point as well.

Before You Book

Common Questions About Classes and Events.

How often should I train per week?

Two to three classes a week is the sweet spot for real progress. One class a week keeps you in the routine but slows things down because too much fades between sessions. Three or more is ideal if you are serious about advancing or working toward a belt. With classes running up to six days a week, including 6 AM and 11 AM adult sessions and evening classes, most schedules can fit a couple of sessions. Members who can only make one class a week are still welcome and will still improve; just set expectations accordingly and talk to your instructor about a realistic timeline.

Do I need to book or can I just show up?

Active members can drop into any eligible class without booking ahead, space permitting. If you are new, the best first step is to claim your free week and book your first class so we know to expect you and put you in the right session. First-time visitors are always welcome to watch a class from the side without booking, too.

What is the difference between the Gi and No-Gi classes?

Gi classes train in the traditional jacket and pants, which adds grips and tends to slow the game down and make it more technical. No-Gi (you will see it on Tuesday and Thursday evenings) drops the jacket for a faster game based on body control instead of grips. Both are real BJJ and most members train a mix of the two.

How do you handle holidays and closures?

We close for major holidays and occasionally adjust the schedule for holiday weeks. Any changes are posted to our Facebook and Instagram at least 48 hours in advance. When in doubt, call (805) 263-1553 or check social media before driving in on a day you are unsure about.

When are belt promotions?

As an official Carlos Machado academy, promotions are based on readiness, not a calendar. Your instructor puts you up for the next belt when your technique, attitude, and consistency are there, which means two people who started the same week might be promoted at different times. That is the point: the belt means what it is supposed to mean.

Is there an open mat?

Yes, Sunday at 2 PM. Open mat is unstructured rolling time to drill, spar, and put the week's work together. It is included with membership and a great low-pressure way to get extra reps.

Can my kids and I train at the same time?

Often, yes, the late-afternoon and evening blocks run kids and adult classes close together, so plenty of parents train while their child is on the mat. Parents are also welcome to train free on the mat alongside their children. Check the grid above and find the block that lines up for your family.

Can I watch a class before I start?

Always. Walk in during open hours, tell whoever is at the desk you would like to watch, and they will point you to where the next class runs. No appointment, no pressure. Watching a real class is the most honest way to judge whether the room is right for you, which is exactly why we offer a free week to try it from the inside.
